Alan Steele is Counsel in the firm's Intellectual Property Group. He was recently selected for inclusion in the 2011 New England Rising Stars list. With over a dozen years of experience in intellectual property, Alan centers his practice on the preparation and prosecution of domestic and foreign patent applications in the fields of biotechnology, immunology, chemistry, nucleic acids, antibodies, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, therapeutics, molecular diagnostics and medical devices. Additionally, his practice includes advising clients in strategic patent portfolio development and management, as well as the preparation of patentability, non-infringement, patent invalidity and patent clearance opinions. Alan's clients include leading hospitals and academic institutions, start-up companies, well-established small companies and large pharmaceutical companies.
Alan also has experience in due diligence studies for patent portfolio licensing and acquisition transactions, trade secrets and litigation support, including, recently, responding to a request to initiate march-in proceedings under the Bayh-Dole Act.
Prior to joining Foley Hoag, Alan was an associate at an intellectual property law firm in Boston. Previous to that, he practiced medicine as an academic internist for thirteen years and was board certified in internal medicine and nephrology. As an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School, Alan headed independent basic research laboratories investigating fundamentals of T-cell and transplantation biology, with a special interest in translational research. He has hands-on technical and clinical expertise in molecular and cellular biology, monoclonal antibodies, transplantation, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, and bioreactors. Prior to his career in medicine, Alan earned his Ph.D. in physical chemistry studying photolysis of hemoglobin and other heme proteins using picosecond laser spectroscopy. In addition, he is a co-inventor of a number of U.S. and foreign patents.
