Biography

Alec Beck has more than twenty years' experience advising and representing employers in labor and employment law. He regularly represents employers in proceedings before state and federal courts, the National Labor Relations Board, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, as well as various other agencies. Since his graduation from law school, Alec has practiced exclusively in the areas of labor relations, employment law and workers' compensation. Alec also provides ongoing counsel and training for employers regarding human resource management, employee relations strategies, and the avoidance of employment-related disputes and liability.

Alec has represented management in several successful and high-profile employment cases, including the 1993 constitutional challenge to the Minnesota Striker Replacement Ban and the1999 constitutional challenge to portions of the Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board statute. He has first-chair trial experience in both the state and federal courts, at the National Labor Relations Board, the United States Department of Labor and the Minnesota Office of Administrative Hearings. Alec also has experience in the legislative area, and has lobbied and advocated on behalf of employers at both the state and federal levels.

Alec is a frequent lecturer on labor and employment matters at seminars, training conferences, and continuing legal education seminars. He is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources by the Society of Human Resource Managers, serves on both state and local SHRM Council Boards, and is a frequent speaker at SHRM events. He is a former Chair of the Minnesota Bar Association's Labor and Employment Section, and was a contributing author to the Section's Newsletter for five years.

Recent Experience

· Obtained a favorable result a sex harassment case in Minnesota U.S. District Court - all counts dismissed either on summary judgment or following a jury trial.

· Obtained summary judgment in a sex discrimination case involving allegations of pregnancy discrimination and retaliation - Minnesota U.S. District Court.

· Obtained dismissal of Unfair Labor Practice Charges involving allegations of unfair bargaining and retaliation.

· Obtained dismissal of grievances in labor arbitration involving termination for violent behavior.
