Alissa Mitchell is a commercial litigation lawyer with a focus on insolvency and restructuring matters. Alissa represents major financial institutions, professional firms, commercial landlords and corporate debtors involved in restructuring and insolvency proceedings and routinely represents court-appointed receivers, monitors and trustees.
Alissa has been involved in proceedings relating to debt collection, contract disputes, determining priorities between secured lenders, bankruptcy, insolvency, and debt restructuring under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, the Companies' Creditors Arrangements Act, the Personal Property Security Act and the Farm Debt Mediation Act, and has appeared on cases in the Court of Appeal and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice including the Commercial List and the Bankruptcy Court. Alissa has experience with restructuring of debtors involved in many industries including agriculture, automotive manufacturing, food products manufacturing, forest products and transportation and logistics.
Alissa is a past instructor of the insolvency section of the Bar Admission Course and a speaker and author of papers on issues affecting her clients. Alissa is editor of the bankruptcy annotations for the Canadian Commercial Law Guide published by CCH Canadian Limited. In past years, Alissa has taught Debtor/Creditor Rights and Litigation Practice at the University of Western Ontario law school.
