Our firm has been a legal force in Sydney since 1822, when 22-year old George Allen opened his offices in Hunter Street. Mr. Allen was the first solicitor admitted in New South Wales to have served his articles in Australia.
The firm grew to become Sydney's premier legal firm and, over the years, had a considerable influence on the development of Australia's legal system. Today, Allens Arthur Robinson is involved in most of Australia's landmark deals. For example, we worked on the BHP/Billiton merger, the largest in Australian history.
Our recent experience includes:
- acting for Wesfarmers in its A$20 billion cash and share offer for Coles Group Ltd. via a scheme of arrangement;
- advised Cemex on its takeover offer for Rinker Group Ltd.;
- acting as Australian counsel to Rio Tinto in relation to the approach made by BHP Billiton;
- advised Rio Tinto on the Australian aspects of its A$44 billion acquisition of Alcan; and
- acted for the independent directors of Qantas in considering and responding to an A$11.1 billion takeover from Airline Partners Australia Limited of 100 per cent of the shares in Qantas.
