André J. Payeur is a counsel and past-chair of the Litigation Group in Montréal.
Since he joined the firm in 1971, he has specialized in civil and commercial litigation with a focus on defending class actions including consumer protection cases, products liability, construction law and medical malpractice. He has represented corporations and institutions before the Québec Superior Court, the Québec Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada in a variety of complex civil and commercial cases, including cross-border class action cases.
Mr. Payeur has also appeared before various administrative and professional disciplinary and quasi-judicial tribunals. He has been a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars on class actions, products liability, construction law and on medical legal issues. He is also a contributing author to Defending Class Actions in Canada, 1st, 2nd and 3rd edition, published by CCH Canadian Limited.
He appears in all editions of the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, a guide to the leading law firms and practitioners in Canada as a leading lawyer in the areas of litigation - class actions and product liability. He also appears as a leading lawyer in class action litigation, product liability law, corporate & commercial litigation and personal injury litigation in the last edition of Best Lawyers in Canada. Mr. Payeur is rated in the 2011 Chambers Global directory in the field of Dispute Resolution.
Mr. Payeur is a member of the Montréal Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Defence Research Institute. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Litigation Counsel of America. He received his BA in 1966 and his LLL in 1969 from the University of Ottawa and was called to the Québec bar in 1971.
