Biography

Andrew McRoberts is a member of our Government group. He focuses his work on land use and zoning, subdivision, real estate, tax asessment, special service districts, and other specialized advice and litigation for local governments in Virginia as well as for private clients needing a lawyer with local government experience and insight. He is based in the firm's Richmond office.

He represents local governments across the state, and is engaged on a part-time basis as Deputy City Attorney for Hampton, Virginia. He was a chief attorney in the successful defense by local governments of the telecommunications equipment assessment cases filed by Verizon at the State Corporation Commission in 2009 and 2010. He formerly served as counsel to the Stafford County Board of Zoning Appeals.

Prior to joining the firm, Andrew served over eight years as the County Attorney for Goochland County, where he earned plaudits for his careful guidance of land use, real estate, tax assessment and special utility districts matters. He achieved a significant record of success in litigation in zoning, tax assessment and other cases on behalf of Goochland. His appointment in Goochland followed similar successful service as County Attorney in Culpeper County and Assistant County Attorney in Arlington County.

Andrew has built expertise in local government law his entire legal career. He is a popular speaker, and a prolific author, having been published in the Virginia State Boar Local Government Section Journal of Local Government Law and in the University of Richmond Law Review. He has authored amicus briefs to the Virginia Supreme Court on behalf of the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia, Virginia Association of Counties and Virginia Municipal League.

Andrew is the managing editor and chief author of the Virginia Local Government Law Blog (http://www.valocalitylaw.com/) on local government issues and legal information in Virginia. In law school, Andrew served as co-notes and comments editor on the University of Richmond Law Review and was selected a member of the McNeill Law Society (for top ten percent of each law class for each semester).

Andrew R. McRoberts, February 16, 2012
