Biography

Anthony J. Saulino, Jr. is Counsel to Butzel Long working in the real estate practice group in the firm's Bloomfield Hills office. He is a cum laude graduate of Xavier University (1968) and holds a J.D., cum laude, from Wayne State University (1985). Prior to practicing law, Mr. Saulino gained significant real estate development expertise working with the planning and economic development departments for the City of Detroit.

Mr. Saulino spends the bulk of his efforts practicing in real estate, business and related areas. He has extensive experience in the use of federal, state and local financing tools, including the HOPE VI Revitalization Grant Program, historic tax credits (both federal and state), conservation easements, HUD Section 108 Financing and New Markets Tax Credits and Section 1031 Like Kind Exchanges as well as various sources of real property tax limitation and abatement. He has represented a broad range of clients in large acquisitions and sales for industrial, commercial and residential developments, including condominiums, as well as in many types of public and private financing, entity counseling and development and commercial leasing with an emphasis on representing real estate developers.

Mr. Saulino has coordinated the activities of multiple lawyers involved in major transactions in the Detroit area and environs, including construction of new hotels and retrofitting of historic hotels, as well as the development of raw land into retail and industrial centers, and the conversion of industrial complexes to mixed use commercial and residential developments.

Mr. Saulino is regularly listed in The Best Lawyers in America, and has recently been included in the inaugural edition of Michigan Super Lawyers.

Experience

· Acted as principal attorneys for the developer of a complex $180,000,000 historical rehabilitation, conversion, retrofitting of a 32 story jewel in downtown Detroit, including all aspects of financing

· Represented hotel owner to bid in and purchased all hard assets of bankrupt onsite restaurant and obtained a full release from lease

· Represented developer in negotiation and financing of land acquisition from Downtown Development Authority and acquisition of the hotel from prior owners

· Represented the project from acquisition of raw land to development of a private road and the construction financing and CM contracts for multiple light industrial buildings

· Represented the purchaser on the acquisition of an existing underutilized retail shopping center in suburban Detroit

· Represeting the seller, managed the $21,000,000 sale of a suburban Detroit private plane airport and subsequent reuse of all sale proceeds under Section 1031 of the IRC to buy seventeen farms in Missouri

· Represented the complex sale of an office, light industrial facility in a Detroit suburb and structured the use of the proceeds into a Section 1031 Exchange to pay for the construction costs of a medical/research facility

· Representation of French company in acquisition of troubled assets of automotive supplier with U.S. and Canadian operations.

· Acted as lead counsel for the conversion of a former housing project in the City of Detroit into multi-use residential property under the HOPE IV Implementation Grant Mixed Finance federal program

· Represented one of the partners and the project development company in the $80,000,000 rehabilitation/conversion of a historic abandoned hotel
