Arash Jahanian is an associate in Crowell & Moring's Labor & Employment and Litigation Practice Groups. Arash's practice in the Labor & Employment Group involves a wide range of issues and is focused on employment discrimination claims and wage-and-hour claims under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). In October 2011, he helped obtain a defense verdict in federal court on behalf of an international management consulting firm defending against collective action claims that its employees were misclassified as exempt from overtime pay under the FLSA. He has also defended major companies against collective action claims of off-the-clock work.
Arash's practice in the Litigation Group focuses on international law and education civil rights law. Arash represents victims of state-sponsored terrorism seeking to recover awards in federal court under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA), and in alternative forums pursuant to an international claims settlement agreement. He also represents a public school district in its compliance with the Equal Educational Opportunities Act (EEOA) through provision of services to English language learners.
Arash's extensive pro bono practice includes the representation of victims of an immigration raid seeking recourse for constitutional civil rights violations by federal officers.
Before joining Crowell & Moring, Arash clerked for the Honorable Wiley Y. Daniel, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Colorado. He graduated with Highest Honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2003, earning a B.A. in Psychology and Journalism and Mass Communication.
In 2008, Arash received a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where he graduated cum laude. While at Georgetown, he served as articles editor for the Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law and participated in the Center for Applied Legal Studies, Georgetown's political asylum clinic. He also helped found the Georgetown Journal of Law & Modern Critical Race Perspectives for which he served as symposium chair during the journal's inaugural year.
