Practice/Industry Group Overview
Arnold & Porter LLP's international trade team handles the full range of international and national legal issues arising from the increasing global trade in goods and services. The practice encompasses international trade regulation and disputes, from advising governments and private parties in free trade negotiations, to litigating disputes before the World Trade Organization, to handling import dispute cases, including antidumping, countervailing duty, and Section 337 intellectual property infringement cases in the US and in other countries. The firm also counsels companies in US international trade compliance, with regard to both exports and imports.
Our trade compliance practice extends to internal investigations and representing clients in agency investigations and penalty proceedings, both civil and criminal. We advise on export compliance, including controls under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), antiboycott legislation, and other laws governing international economic activity. On the import side, we advise on the many aspects of customs law (from tariff classification to valuation) and duty preference regimes, including NAFTA and other free trade agreements.
Our clients include US and international corporations, governments, international organizations, trade associations, nongovernmental organizations, and individuals in virtually all aspects of international trading activity. They come to us for sophisticated and cost-effective solutions to their trade challenges, including strategies that are best crafted through a deep understanding of the intersection of law, business, and policy.
Our international practice offers our clients a seasoned team of lawyers, many of whom have received recognition and high ratings both internationally and in the US. Our international trade team is backed by the full resources of our firm, including attorneys with extensive experience in Washington, DC, policy matters, a number of whom have served in leadership or staff positions at the Departments of State, Commerce, Treasury, and Justice, as well as in the US Congress. We also can draw upon an informal network of attorneys practicing on six continents, many of whom are alumni of our Foreign Attorney Program.
