Barbara J. Meier is of counsel in Barnes & Thornburg LLP's Indianapolis, Indiana office where she is a member of the Litigation Department. Her areas of concentration include commercial disputes, product liability, medical devices, and toxic torts. She also handles cases involving premises liability, pipelines and related land use, regulatory and environmental concerns, class actions, contract disputes, the UCC, construction site accidents, business franchises, and insurance coverage.
Ms. Meier has represented a major petroleum company for the past fifteen years in matters involving numerous issues integral to both upstream (exploration and production) and downstream (retail) aspects of petroleum companies. Her experience has included managing negotiation and enforcement of easements, defense of alleged violations of the PMPA, and alleged failure to comply with environmental regulations governing remediation of petroleum releases. Ms. Meier has experience in compliance counseling and defending allegations of violation of the PMPA, federal regulations governing the construction, maintenance and operation of hazardous liquid pipelines, and OSHA regulations governing trenching. Additionally, Ms. Meier has experience working with System Integrity Engineers and has a detailed understanding of the various technologies and federal regulations involved in pipeline construction, inspection and maintenance.
Ms. Meier was awarded her J.D. degree summa cum laude in 1991 by the Indiana University School of Law -Indianapolis, where she was a member of the Indiana Law Review. She received the Chancellor's Scholar Award, School of Law, for her academic achievements. Ms. Meier also holds a B.S. in education and an M.A. in microbiology from the University of Kansas.
Ms. Meier is a member of DRI, the American Bar Association, as well as both the Indianapolis and Indiana State Bar Associations.
