Bart A. Karwath is a partner in the Litigation Department in Barnes & Thornburg's Indianapolis, Indiana office. His practice areas include ERISA, Civil RICO, Insurance, Municipal, Utilities, UCC/Sales, Contracts, Construction, Commercial Lease, Real Estate, and Government Litigation. He is a member of the firm's ERISA Litigation Practice Group, Commercial Litigation Practice Group, and Construction Law Practice Group.
Mr. Karwath has written and spoken on a variety of legal topics, including ERISA and Civil RICO litigation. Mr. Karwath graduated from the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs in 1988 with a B.S. in Public Affairs. In 1991, he earned his J.D. magna cum laude from the Indiana University School of Law - Bloomington, and was selected for membership in the Order of the Coif.
Mr. Karwath served as a law clerk to the Honorable V. Sue Shields, Presiding Judge of the Second District of the Court of Appeals Indiana, and as a law clerk to the Honorable Larry J. McKinney, Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.
Mr. Karwath is designated as an AV-rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell and was selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® 2011 & 2012 in the areas of Commercial Litigation, Litigation - Construction, Litigation - ERISA, and Litigation - Municipal. He has also been selected for inclusion in the 2004-2009 editions, and the 2011-2012 editions of Indiana Super Lawyers®. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA), the Defense Research Institute, and the Indiana Benefits Conference. Mr. Karwath currently chairs the ISBA's Pension and Benefit Law Special Committee and has served at the request of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana on committees for the selection of and reappointment of Magistrate Judges.
Mr. Karwath has volunteered for and served on the boards of various civic and non-profit organizations. Presently, he is on the Board of the American Heart Association, Midwest Affiliate.
