Bernhard D. Saxe is a retired partner in Foley & Lardner LLP's Washington, D.C. office. A former member of the firm's Intellectual Property Department (Chemical & Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Practice Groups), Dr. Saxe has more than 25 years of experience in U.S. and international chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology patent law; medical, pharmaceutical and chemical intellectual property licensing and litigation; patent drafting, prosecution and counseling; trademark law; and the transfer of technology. His practice involved counseling entrepreneurial companies and research and development organizations in managing their intellectual property portfolios and in securing, licensing, protecting and enforcing their rights in valuable technology.
In 2003, Dr. Saxe was named one of America's top ten prosecuting patent attorneys by IP Law & Business. His technical background covers chemistry, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and immunology. Prior to joining Foley, Dr. Saxe was the vice president for patent affairs at Immunomedics, Inc., now located in Morris Plains, New Jersey.
Dr. Saxe graduated from Johns Hopkins University (B.S., chemistry, with honors, 1960) and Columbia University (M.S., Ph.D., organic chemistry). He was awarded a one-year NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship to carry out research at the Institut de Chimie in Strasbourg, France. He taught chemistry at Beloit College as an assistant and associate professor, with tenure, for nine years before undertaking the study of law. He graduated from the George Washington University School of Law (J.D., with honors, 1981).
Dr. Saxe is admitted to practice in Virginia and the District of Columbia and before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Federal and Fourth Circuits. He also is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of the D.C.,Virginia and American Bar Associations, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the American Chemical Society.
Dr. Saxe is fluent in French and possesses moderate German language capability.
