Bernice Karn is a partner in the Information, Communications & Entertainment Group at Cassels Brock where she practises intellectual property law, with an emphasis on technology, licensing and distribution issues. Bernice acts for clients involved in software distribution, data management, outsourcing and data security. She also advises on privacy issues. Prior to joining Cassels Brock, Bernice was in-house counsel for a global packaged goods manufacturer and retailer where her corporate and commercial practice focused on intellectual property, competition law, franchising and secured transactions. Most recently, Bernice was General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and Director of Real Estate at one of Canada's largest specialty retailers. Bernice has lectured frequently at various technology-related seminars and has spoken on outsourcing, data security, social media, e-commerce and Canadian privacy legislation. In addition, she is the co-author of a "Quick Reference" text published by Carswell on the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. Bernice joined Cassels Brock in 2000. She has co-chaired the OBA Annual Institute Program on Outsourcing. She is a past Chair of the Ontario Bar Association Information Technology Section, and a member of the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association, the Licensing Executives' Society (Internet and E-commerce Committee), the IT-Canada Ad Hoc Committee on Privacy, the IT-Canada Outsourcing Committee and a past Chair of the Cassels Brock Women's Networking Group.
