Bob is a partner in the Regina office with over 20 years experience in criminal law and civil litigation.
Bob has successfully appeared before all levels of court in Saskatchewan and acted as lead counsel in many significant criminal trials in Saskatchewan. He has successfully advanced "battered spouse syndrome" defences and "defence of third parties" defences in homicide cases. He was instrumental in changing the way in which juries are selected in Saskatchewan in homicide cases and initiated the first successful challenge to juror impartiality. Bob's research into the legitimacy of jury trials has been published in leading national journals. In 2001 Bob commenced one of the largest criminal trials in the history of Western Canada, which was a trial of 39 accused on 38 counts of criminal organization. The trial proceeded in Edmonton and concluded with stays of proceedings for all accused.
Bob frequently makes constitutional challenges to the process of detention and arrest which include challenges to vehicle stops, searches, arbitrary detentions of accused, and the legitimacy of breath demands. These challenges extend to post arrest process and include the right to disclosure of all evidence in the case, and the right to be tried in a timely fashion. These applications not infrequently result in acquittals or stays of proceedings.
Bob maintains an extensive and varied practice in criminal law, which has expanded into regulatory offences and white collar crime. He does work for rural municipalities, corporations and the indigent.
Bob is a past president of the Saskatchewan Trial Lawyers Association.
