Breton is an associate in the firm's Boston office, where he practices in the Litigation Section. He focuses his practice on securities litigation and government investigations. He has represented officers, directors, and corporations in private civil actions as well as investigations by and proceedings before the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Massachusetts Securities Division, and the Department of Justice. Bret has co-authored several articles on various aspects of the federal securities laws.
Bret also has experience on issues involving environmental litigation and permitting. In addition to representing a corporation in a complex permitting matter before both state and governmental agencies, he has also been involved in litigation involving the release and clean-up of hazardous substances.
Bret helps coordinate the firm's records management services. In this capacity, he has drafted records management policies and retention schedules for several large corporations, and has also co-authored an article on the subject. He contributes to the firm's commitment to pro bono work with regular involvement in cases referred by the Volunteer Lawyer's Project and the Rape Survivor's Law Project.
While in law school, Bret participated in the Michigan Clinical Law Program, where he represented clients in civil and criminal cases in various forums, including the Michigan Supreme Court. He also gained legal experience while working as a law clerk at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Vermont.
Bret is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, and before the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First and Second Circuits.
He received his B.A. in English, with departmental honors, from Wesleyan University (1997) and earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School (2002), where he was an articles editor for the Michigan Journal of Law Reform.
