Brian D. Edmonds is a partner in our Litigation Group in the Toronto office. He is the past head of the firm's Toronto Intellectual Property Section and its Intellectual Property Litigation Group. As a qualified patent and trade-mark agent and barrister, Mr. Edmonds has been involved in intellectual property law and litigation since his call to the bar. In addition to the traditional areas of intellectual property, such as patents and trade-marks, his practice includes the areas of breach of confidence, breach of fiduciary duty, e-commerce and Internet technology. Mr. Edmonds has conducted litigation in the fields of: mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering; pharmaceuticals; electromagnetics; pulp and paper; computer hardware and software; and the Internet. Mr. Edmonds' interest in intellectual property litigation started as an articling student. He was part of the team representing the plaintiff in an action to enforce copyright in the famous Farrah Fawcett personality poster. The plaintiff obtained a precedent-setting financial award against the counterfeiter, including a record punitive damage award. He was part of the McCarthy Tétrault team acting for the plaintiffs in the ICRAVE-TV webcasting litigation before the Commercial Court in Toronto. He was also counsel for WIC Television Limited and Global Communications Limited in the ITV Technologies webcasting case, in which Internet-sourced evidence figured prominently. Mr. Edmonds is a trained mediator and has been appointed to the Panel of Neutrals of the International Trademark Association. He has guest lectured in intellectual property matters for professional conference companies, the Canadian Satellite Users Association, the University of Toronto, the University of Windsor, the Ontario and Alberta branches of the Canadian Bar Association, and The Advocates' Society. He is a Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and a member of the International Trademark Association, the Licensing Executives Society, the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the AIPPI. He received his LLB from the University of Western Ontario and was called to the Ontario bar in 1981. Mr. Edmonds volunteers extensively for organizations involving youth and the outdoors. He is a member of the Board of Directors of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Program, Ontario Division and sits on its Operations Committee. He is the founding leader of a group of Toronto youth working on the Award. Mr. Edmonds is a member of the Standards Committee of the Ontario Camps Association.
