Biography

Brian R. Dorn, Ph.D., is of counsel in Barnes & Thornburg LLP's Minneapolis office and is a member of the Intellectual Property Department.

Dr. Dorn has an array of experience in intellectual property with particular emphasis on biotech, pharmaceutical, and medical device patent prosecution and opinion work. He has advised clients regarding patent filing and prosecution strategy in addition to opinions regarding infringement, freedom to operate, patentability, and validity. His patent prosecution and opinion experience includes stem cells, humanized antibodies, therapeutic peptides, small molecule pharmaceuticals, diagnostic and immuno-assays, therapeutic delivery systems, antimicrobials, phage display systems, microarrays, transgenic animals, transgenic plants, nanobiotechnology, medical devices, and medical device coatings.

Dr. Dorn's practice also includes international patenting, where he works with universities, companies, and patent attorneys outside the United States to obtain patents in and outside the United States.

Dr. Dorn is also a frequent speaker and writer on the subjects of patentable subject matter and biosimilars.

Prior to joining Barnes & Thornburg, Dr. Dorn practiced with Merchant & Gould, P.C. His patent prosecution experience spanned the fields of biotech, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices for universities and companies of varying sizes, from Fortune 500 to startups.

Dr. Dorn earned his J.D. magna cum laude from the University of Florida College of Law in 2003, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif, and served on the Florida Law Review and Journal of Technology Law and Policy. Dr. Dorn also earned his Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences -- Microbiology/Immunology from the University of Florida College of Medicine in 2003. His doctoral research studied the invasion and intracellular trafficking of Porphyromonas gingivalis in oral and vascular cells. This research was interdisciplinary, spanning the fields of microbiology, cell biology, and genetics (both human and microbial).

Active in the community, Dr. Dorn serves on the advisory board for the University of Minnesota's Joint Degree Program in Law, Health & the Life Sciences and on the Board of Directors of the American Israel Chamber of Commerce of Minnesota. In addition, he also serves as an advisor to NanoVox, a nascent multistate nanotechnology organization.

Dr. Dorn is admitted to practice at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, U.S. District Court of Minnesota, and Minnesota state courts.
