Bruce DeRenzi is a partner in the firm's Intellectual Property Group in New York, where he specializes in patent litigation and counseling for both U.S. and foreign companies. Bruce earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Chemical Engineering from Manhattan College in 1980 and a Juris Doctorate degree from New York Law School in 1987, graduating with honors. Prior to pursuing a career in law, Bruce worked as a chemical process engineer for a leading consumer products company.
Bruce has extensive experience in all aspects of patent litigation in the Federal Courts and International Trade Commission, from pre-suit investigations through trial and appeal. He has litigated patent cases, for both plaintiff and defendant, involving a wide array of technologies including petroleum products and processes (zeolite cracking catalysts, carbide blast joints), chemical products and processes (titanium dioxide pigments, automotive paints and finishes, herbicides and fungicides), consumer products (disposable diapers, bath tissue), printing systems (digital halftone screens, printing ribbons and inks), mechanical devices and processes (personal watercraft, leak detection systems, wood chip densifiers), electronic devices (liquid crystal displays, light emitting diodes, laser eye surgery apparatus, semiconductor chips), telecommunications (internet controlled telephone systems) and pharmaceutical products (prenatal vitamins, nutritional supplements, medical foods, and Paragraph IV filings under the Hatch-Waxman Act).
In addition to litigation, Bruce's practice involves rendering opinions relating to patent validity, enforcement and infringement, and providing strategic advice to companies directed to the development and management of their intellectual property portfolios. Bruce also has experience in complex proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including patent reexamination and reissue proceedings.
Bruce is admitted to the New York and New Jersey bars, and is admitted to practice before the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the District of New Jersey, the District of Colorado and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Bruce is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Bruce is a member of the New Jersey Intellectual Property Association, the American Intellectual Property Association and the Federal Circuit Bar Association. He is also a member of the New York Intellectual Property Association where he has also acted as Chair for the Patent Law and Practice Committee (2009-2010).
In 2011, Bruce was selected by his peers as a New York Metro Super Lawyer in the Intellectual Property Litigation category.
