Burton Tait is a retired partner from our Litigation Group in Toronto. He has 40 years of experience in all aspects of commercial civil litigation and a variety of other fields.
Mr. Tait has been a member of the bars of Ontario and Alberta, called in 1967 and 1982 respectively, appearing in all levels of courts in those provinces, various administrative tribunals and in the Federal Court of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada. In 2003, he received a courtesy call to the bar of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
His varied career has covered a broad spectrum of complex and technical litigation, including all types of business disputes, medical, legal and other professional liability, mining, banking, insolvency, real property, intellectual property, libel and slander. In addition to Mr. Tait's litigation techniques, he regularly satisfied client needs with his skills in arbitration, mediation and negotiated dispute resolution. He has also acquired an extensive knowledge of the international arbitration process.
Mr. Tait now conducts an independent practice as a mediator and arbitrator through Dispute Resolution Services LLP. He has been appointed a Deputy Judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice for the Toronto Small Claims Court.
Mr. Tait served two terms as a director of the Advocates' Society and has taught trial practice in the Bar Admission program and in trial advocacy courses.
Mr. Tait received his BA from the University of Toronto and his LLB (standing 2nd in the class) from Osgoode Hall Law School. Mr. Tait was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1980.
