Carmen N. Couden is senior counsel with Foley & Lardner LLP. She is a member of the firm's Labor & Employment Practice and Automotive Industry Team. As part of her practice, Ms. Couden represents employers in investigatory proceedings before state agencies and in legal actions in federal and state court.
During law school, Ms. Couden participated as a summer associate with Foley & Lardner LLP. She also interned with the Johnson County Attorney's Office in Iowa City, Iowa, where she served as first chair on simple misdemeanor bench and jury trials and negotiated numerous plea agreements.
Ms. Couden earned her law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law and was awarded the College of Law's Dean's Achievement Award. While in law school, Ms. Couden served as a student writer and Articles Editor for the Journal of Corporation Law and held officer positions in various student organizations. Ms. Couden received her Bachelor of Science degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Ms. Couden is licensed to practice in the state of Wisconsin and is admitted to the bars of the Eastern District of Wisconsin, the Northern and Southern Districts of Illinois, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. She is also a member of the Wisconsin Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Association for Women Lawyers, the Milwaukee Young Lawyers Association, the Hispanic National Bar Association, the Wisconsin Hispanic Lawyers Association, and the Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee.
Ms. Couden's civic involvements include membership in the Brain Injury Association of Wisconsin, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Alumni Association, and the University of Wisconsin-Richland Alumni Association.
Ms. Couden is the author of "The Thompson Memorandum: A Revised Solution or Just a Problem?," 30 J. Corp. L. 405-423 (2005). She also is a contributor to the annual employment law treatise, The Law Guide - Employee Relations Law for Wisconsin Employers, published by MRA - The Management Association, Inc.
