Diversity: Carmody & Torrance LLP

Diversity at Carmody & Torrance LLP

Diversity is integral to who we are and a key component of our strategic plan. Our goal is simple: We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where individual differences and perspectives are respected and encouraged. We know that they are a vital source of strength for our firm.

Consequently, Carmody & Torrance is committed to attracting and retaining superb, well-rounded lawyers and staff by nurturing an atmosphere where employees from all backgrounds can flourish based on their talent, knowledge, passion and dedication.

We regularly attend recruiting fairs and promote networking groups to ensure that relationships among our minority lawyers are strong and supportive. The firm’s diversity efforts are directed by our managing partner and practice group leaders as well as our human resources professional staff.

Carmody & Torrance is a founding member of the Connecticut Lawyers' Group (now known as the Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity, Inc.), a consortium of law firms and corporate and government law departments dedicated to increasing opportunities for minorities in the legal profession.

The firm has an extraordinary track record of open-minded and progressive policies concerning the advancement of women. Today the four-member management team includes three women, and Carmody & Torrance was the first major law firm in Connecticut to elect a woman, Ann Rubin, as its managing partner. In addition, our two practice groups, business services and litigation, are headed by women – Ann Zucker and Maureen Cox, respectively. We view the principle of equal employment opportunity as a vital element in the employment process and as a hallmark of good management.

In recognition of our outstanding gender equity policies, the Connecticut Bar Association named our firm as the first recipient of its Sue L. Wise Gender Equity in the Profession Award. In announcing its decision, the Connecticut Bar Association praised in particular the firm’s written employment policies, childcare subsidy, dependent care flexible spending accounts and the firm’s large percentage of female partners. Today, one-third of the firm’s partners and 55 percent of our associates are women.

In short, we believe that employing people of diverse, eclectic backgrounds and perspectives maximizes our potential for success and creates a vibrant, creative and productive workplace.
