About this office:
With more than 120 partners and 270 lawyers, Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, is one of the largest business law firms in South Africa (SA). The firm combines a significant national footprint - with sizeable influence in SA's main commercial centres, Johannesburg and Cape Town - and global reach through its affiliation to DLA Piper, one of the world's largest legal services organizations.
Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr's roots date back to 1853. The firm has evolved and grown through a series of mergers, culminating in the milestone merger on 1 September 2008 of two of South Africa's largest and leading, national corporate law firms, Cliffe Dekker and Hofmeyr Herbstein & Gihwala.
The merger created enhanced depth of skills and capabilities across the full complement of business legal services, which are structured around eleven core practice groups: Corporate and Commercial, Competition/Antitrust; Dispute Resolution: Litigation, Arbitration and Mediation; Employment/Labour; Environmental Law; Finance, Projects and Banking; Intellectual Property; Real Estate; Tax; Technology, Media and Telecommunications and Trusts and Estates.
The firm now has one of the largest Corporate and Commercial/Merger & Acquisition practices in SA with a team of more than 50 qualified lawyers and a Private Equity team comprising 21 partners and more than 38 lawyers with specialist skills spanning corporate, funding and tax. The Tax practice has 10 tax and legal practitioners.
Size and capacity bring the depth of skills and specialization needed to meet a client's full service business needs, no matter the size of the transaction; large or small; anywhere in the world.

The focus of Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr's Pro Bono Department, which is still very much in its infancy, is on making a contribution to providing pro bono legal services in respect of issues that are important to South African society. The Pro Bono Department will be focusing on creating partnerships and nurturing relationships with NGO's, non-profitable and charitable organizations and other appropriate institutions. At present the firm sources the majority of its pro bono work from ProBono.Org, a clearing house whose focus is on providing quality legal assistance to marginalized individuals and communities.
