Dan Cillo has been special counsel in the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Group since 1998. Prior to joining Eckert Seamans, Dan was employed by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation patent law department for over thirty years. In addition to his patent activities at Westinghouse, he was co-author and co-editor (1991-1997) of a 100-page "Patent Infringement and Validity Opinion Guide." At Westinghouse, he negotiated patent title waiver contracts with NASA, DOE and DOD. He was patent chair of diverse units including Insulating Materials, Thermoking refrigeration, Longines timepieces, CBS TV and Nuclear Services, as well as patent co-chair of the R&D Center. He has prosecuted and issued patents and has broad experience in the areas of chemical, electrochemical, high power laser systems, power generation, ceramics, stealth coatings, high temperature composites, missile silo stabilization systems, deep water submarine battery systems, reverse osmosis water purification, environmental, green friendly roofing, aluminum manufacture, uranium concentration and nuclear waste management; as well as Siemens Corporation solid oxide fuel cell systems. He has filed appeal briefs and argued before the U.S. Board of Patent Appeals. He has also been actively involved in several Patent Interferences and participated in several Westinghouse acquisition and divestiture resolutions.
Representative Matters
· Currently involved in Right-to-Use Manufacture and Sell, Infringement Opinions, as well as third-party validity opinions, involving $10 Million to $150 Million potential facilities construction in the nuclear industry;
· Currently involved in a highly specialized patent preparation and prosecution practice in the areas of nuclear fuel production, nuclear cladding alloys, nuclear reactor start-up systems and advanced molten metal cooled "fast" nuclear reactors in, for example, U.S., European Union, China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan; as well as advanced electrical storage and state-of-the-art oxide-ion battery systems, for major international corporations;
· Unique ability to relate to corporate counsel and inventors, having been in corporate practice for a very substantial period of time; and, in fact, having supervised Eckert Seamans' attorneys for Westinghouse: 1993-1997, including patent prosecution and Right-to-Use Opinions.
