Biography

David Williams has more than 30 years of experience in complex commercial litigation and arbitration in a wide variety of areas, including antitrust, banking, bankruptcy, business tort claims, civil rights, contracts, environmental, real estate, reinsurance, and fraud claims. He also conducts internal investigations and advises clients on matters involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

David received his J.D. from the University of Virginia Law School in 1979 and his B.A., cum laude, from Yale University in 1974. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court; the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Second, Fourth, Fifth, Ninth, and Tenth Circuits; and the U.S. District Courts for the District of Columbia, Maryland, and the Northern District of New York. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, where he is active in its Litigation Section. He writes and speaks frequently on a variety of legal topics.

David is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Oatlands, Virginia chapter of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Board of Trustees of the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs.

• Representation of the debtors in environmental and litigation matters in the Lyondell Chemical Company Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases (U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York).

• Representation of the U.S. Treasury Department's Presidential Auto Task Force in environmental and litigation matters in the General Motors and Chrysler Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases (U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York).

• Representation of Cigna and General & Cologne Life Re as lead trial counsel in a $350 million reinsurance litigation in the New York and Washington courts.

• Representation of the debtors in environmental and litigation matters in the Caribbean Petroleum Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases (U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware).

• Representation of BP/Amoco in the defense of challenges brought by environmental groups to the company's plans for extraction of oil off the North Slope of Alaska (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit).

• Representation of the debtors in litigation matters in the Enron Chapter 11 bankruptcy case (U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts for the Southern District of New York).

• Representation of several Fortune 100 multinational companies in FCPA matters.

• Representation of the central bank of the Government of Pakistan in a $50 million banking dispute with the liquidators of BCCI (U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit).

• Representation of Northwest Airlines and its affiliates in a private antitrust action (including a 37-day jury trial) challenging the prevailing hub-and-spoke system used by Northwest and other major airlines (U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit).

• Representation of McKesson, GE and several other companies in contribution litigation brought under the federal Superfund statute against a nonsettling defendant for costs incurred in remediation of the PAS Oswego Superfund Site (U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York).

• Defense of Unilever in environmental litigation filed by the U.S. involving cleanup of a river in Indiana (U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana).

• Environmental claims counsel to National Gypsum Company in its Chapter 11 case, including trial of EPA Superfund claims in the first-ever estimation of environmental claims under the Bankruptcy Code (U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts of the Northern District of Texas).

• Three different litigations involving commercial real estate in the federal and state courts of the District of Columbia and Maryland on behalf of Citicorp.
