David Heiman has practiced in the bankruptcy/restructuring area for more than 35 years (founding Jones Day's practice in 1984), playing a key role in many large business bankruptcy and out-of-court business restructurings in the United States. His practice includes representations of debtors, lenders, creditors, and distressed assets purchasers.
David led the City of Detroit chapter 9 case, the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Representative chapter 11 and out-of-court debtor representations include: Allied Stores/Federated Department Stores (also as acquirer of R.H. Macy), RadioShack, NII Holdings, Boscov's Department Stores, Burlington Industries, Cardinal Industries, Child World, Chrysler LLC, Imperial Home Decor Group, Kendavis Industries, LTV Steel, Oglebay Norton, Pillowtex, Tribune Companies, USG, and White Motor. He represented lenders in the Carmike Cinemas, Olympia & York, and Phar-Mor restructurings and creditors in the Allegheny Health, Education and Research Foundation; Home Place; and Paragon Trade Brands restructurings. He advised acquirors of distressed assets, including American Greetings and WL Ross & Co., in the American Home Mortgage, Bethlehem Steel, Collins & Aikman, and Horizon National Resources matters. David currently represents the debtors in the Alpha Natural Resources chapter 11 case.
David is past chair of the American College of Bankruptcy, currently co-chairs the Governance Advisory Board of the ABI Study on Chapter 11, and led bar-related, community, and charitable groups. He was named a leading lawyer in bankruptcy/restructuring in virtually all the relevant ranking publications. He was one of The American Lawyer's 2015 Dealmakers of the Year and received Law360's 2014 MVP Award for Business Restructuring/Reorganization.
