David Cichy is a litigator and partner in the Calgary office of Miller Thomson. David was born and raised in southern Alberta. He received his Bachelor of Commerce degree magna cum laude in operations and system analysis from Brigham Young University in 1981. He graduated from the University of Alberta Law School in 1985 and articled with the Alberta Court of Appeal and Alberta Court of Queen's Bench 1985-1986. David practiced as a partner with a major Calgary law firm prior to joining Miller Thomson in January 2000.
David practices exclusively in the area of civil litigation, concentrating in commercial, product liability, tort, oil and gas, and insurance dispute resolution. He has significant experience in dealing with complex industrial, oil and gas, and commercial losses, claims and disputes, including the defence of several of Alberta's largest lawsuits occurring in the oil and gas industry.
In 1990 he became certified by the Alberta Fire Prevention Branch in fire investigation (cause determination). He is a member of the Canadian Association of Fire Investigators and the International Association of Arson Investigators. He has appeared before all levels of Court in Alberta as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. He has also participated in various forms of alternate dispute resolution.
Since the early 1990's, David has been effectively using computer technology as a litigation tool. Further, alternative dispute resolution has played a prominent role in effectively and efficiently resolving disputes.
David was a member of the Special Committee of the Alberta Court of Appeal dealing with "computerization" of appeals. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in February of 2006.
David's non-work interests relate to family (married with 5 children and 4 grandchildren) and Church-related responsibilities.
