David Schnurr is an Intellectual Property (IP) lawyer and is an Associate in the Waterloo office of Miller Thomson. He is a Registered Canadian and U.S. Patent Agent, having passed the Patent Agent Examinations on his first attempt. David is also a Registered Canadian and U.S. Trade-mark Agent. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 2007 after summering and articling with Miller Thomson. As a second year associate, David was seconded to the in-house legal department of a leading Canadian wireless communications company headquartered in Waterloo.
In 2009, David was named an adjunct professor at the University of Western Ontario, Faculty of Law, where he teaches the Advanced Intellectual Property course. In 2011, he was recognized by the UWO University Students' Council with a USC Teaching Award of Excellence.
David completed his LL.B. at the University of Western Ontario, where he was the recipient of the Dean of Law Entrance Scholarship and obtained highest standing in Advanced Patent Law. Prior to attending Western, David obtained his Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Waterloo, where he graduated on the Dean's Honours List and was the recipient of the Applied Health Sciences Year One Scholarship.
Throughout his undergraduate career, David was employed as a researcher in a cancer research laboratory. During that time, he was the recipient of two Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Undergraduate Student Research Awards. David's research has appeared in leading scientific journals, including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
David's intellectual property practice includes the provision of legal services in respect of patents, trade-marks, copyright, and industrial designs, including the filing, prosecution, registration and maintenance of such applications, the preparation of patentability and trade-mark registrability opinions, intellectual property due diligence in corporate transactions, trade-mark oppositions, and the enforcement of intellectual property rights generally. He also has gained experience in the areas of advertising and marketing law, Internet domain name disputes and the preparation and negotiation of technology contracts, including software licenses, maintenance and support agreements, professional services agreements, non-disclosure agreements and reseller agreements.
David is a lifelong resident of Waterloo.
