Deborah is a partner with Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP in Toronto, Ontario Canada in our Restructuring and Insolvency Group. Practicing exclusively in corporate restructuring and insolvency matters since 1986, she is one of few practitioners certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Specialist in Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law (since 1996). Deborah's corporate restructuring practice includes significant cross-border proceedings. Deborah has represented a variety of stakeholders in proceedings involving; for example, NewPage, Blockbuster, Nortel Networks, AbitibiBowater, Air Canada, Stelco, Allied Holdings, Livent, Teleglobe, Philip Services Corp., Laidlaw, Outboard Marine, Canada 3000, Ivaco, Ottawa Senators, Hurricane Hydrocarbons, Saan stores, Progressive Moulded Products and Eatons. She also has extensive experience acting in insurance company liquidations, such as Reliance Insurance Company and others. Deborah has been involved for many years in international, federal and provincial law associations. She is currently Chair of the Canadian Network of the International Women's Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC), and a member of its international Board. In 2011, she was honoured to receive the Martha Fetner Award for outstanding individual international contribution to IWIRC and to accept the Ryan Award as chair of the Canadian Network. Deborah was the Chair of, and remains engaged on, the executive committees of both the Canadian Bar Association - Bankruptcy and Insolvency Section (2004-2006) and the Ontario Bar Association - Insolvency Law Section (1999-2000). At the request of the office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy of Canada, Deborah has participated as an examiner on the panel that conducts the final oral examinations of prospective trustees in bankruptcy. She was also responsible for the Insolvency Law section of the Business Law component of Ontario's Bar Admission Course, including all lectures. Deborah is a member of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice Commercial List Users Committee, and of the Ontario Bar Association Personal Property Security Legislation committee, which studies and proposes submissions for legal reform. She recently participated in the 39th and 40th sessions of the Insolvency Working Group V of the United Nations Commission of the International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) on cross-border insolvency issues. She speaks regularly on a broad range of corporate restructuring, insolvency and personal property security issues.
