Donald Bisson is a partner in our Litigation Group in Montréal and he is Chair of the National Class Action Group.
His practice is mainly focused on general litigation, commercial litigation, class actions defense and public law litigation. Mr. Bisson has defended class action suits in almost all areas of law, including securities, banking, contracts, civil liability, consumer protection, misrepresentations and product liability. In addition to concentrating on the authorization to institute a class action, this experience also includes the merits of the action.
With respect to class actions and commercial litigation, Mr. Bisson was involved in complex matters where several teams of numerous lawyers from many regions across Canada were required, integrated with clients and foreign law firms. A lot of these matters involved technical issues.
Mr. Bisson is the author of many articles and conferences.
He is also a contributing author of the 1st and 2nd Editions of McCarthy Tétrault Defending Class Actions in Canada, a concise resource on class actions in Canada from a defense perspective, published by CCH.
Mr. Bisson is a member of the Québec Bar Committee on Class Actions. He is also a member of the executive of the Class Actions Québec division of the Canadian Bar Association as well as a member of the Barreau du Québec Committee for The Consumer Protection Act Reform.
Mr. Bisson is recognized in the 2011 edition of The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, a guide to the leading law firms and practitioners in Canada, as a leading lawyer in class action. He is also rated in the 2010 "Leading Litigation Lawyers in Canada" edition of Lexpert as a leading lawyer in the fields of Corporate & Commercial, Class Action & Securities, Intellectual Property, Directors' & Officers' Liability and Corporate Tax Litigation. He is also rated by Martindale-Hubbell and he appears as a leading lawyer in class action and corporate and commercial litigation in the last edition of Best Lawyers in Canada. He also appears as a leading lawyer in his field in the 2011 edition of Chambers Global.
Mr. Bisson received his LLB (gold medal - first of his promotion) from the Université de Montréal in 1992 and his LLM (public law, with honours) from King's College London (University of London) in 1995. He was called to the Québec Bar in 1993.
In 1993 and 1994, he was a law clerk for the Honourable Justice Claire L'Heureux-Dubé of the Supreme Court of Canada, in Ottawa.
