Douglas Cannon

Douglas A. Cannon is a partner in our Tax Group in Toronto and the National Practice Group Leader for Tax.

Mr. Cannon practises taxation law with an emphasis on domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, reorganizations and financings. His practice also includes advising on tax aspects of business operations, transfer pricing and private equity investments. He has represented clients before the Canada Revenue Agency, the Ontario Ministry of Finance and the Canadian Department of Finance.

Mr. Cannon is a Governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation. He is a member of the CBA/CICA Joint Committee on Taxation, the Tax Section of the Ontario Bar Association, the American Bar Association (Tax), the International Fiscal Association and the Toronto Centre CRA/Professionals Consultation Committee.

The 2009 LEXPERT/The American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada lists Mr. Cannon as a leading lawyer in the area of corporate tax. Mr. Cannon is listed as one of the Best Lawyers in Canada in the area of Tax Law. He is also listed in the 2009 edition of Chambers Global: The World's Leading Lawyers as a leading individual in the area of tax, and in the 2009 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, a guide to the leading law firms and practitioners in Canada, as a leading lawyer in the areas of corporate tax and investment funds and is included in Lexpert's 2009 Guide to the Leading US/Canada Cross-border Corporate Lawyers in Canada. The Legal Post (National Post) has described Mr. Cannon as "a player and a half" in corporate tax work.

He has written numerous articles and presented papers on a variety of income tax subjects, including partnership reorganizations, mutual funds, major business agreements, variable management fees, foreign property investments for tax exempt entities, income funds, debt/debt-like instruments, share purchase agreements, cross-border software payments, employee stock options, take-over restructuring, tax effective, repatriation from Canadian corporations, foreign spin-offs and financing investments in Canada.

Mr. Cannon received his B.Comm. (summa cum laude) from McMaster University in 1976, and his LLB (Hons.) from the University of Toronto in 1979. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1981.
