Background
Douglas Mitchell is National Co-chair of the Firm and is Counsel in our Calgary office.
Mr. Mitchell graduated from the University of British Columbia Law School with an LL.B. and is a member of the Alberta Bar. While attending Law School he played football for University of British Columbia and then professional football for the B.C. Lions of the Canadian Football League. Prior to that he attended Colorado College on a Hockey Scholarship and graduated with a B.A. in Business Administration.

· Mr. Mitchell began his career with the predecessor law firm of Howard, Mackie specializing in Corporate and Commercial Law.
· Other practice areas include Commercial Real Estate and Sports Law.
Professional Experience
· Corporate - advising both multinational and small business in corporate and commercial matters and in the negotiation of and drafting of agreements related thereto; asset/share purchase and sale agreements; shareholder agreements; amalgamations; executive employment and benefit agreements; winding up and liquidations; reorganizations.
· Negotiation and preparation of commercial leases.
· Acquisitions, negotiations and purchase and sale of real estate assets.
· Partnerships/Joint Ventures - joint venture and partnership agreements for all phases of the practice including corporate and commercial ventures.
· Financing, purchasing of various commercial enterprises.
Professional and Community Activities
· Past Chairman of Young Lawyers Conference of Canada and Past Member of the National Executive, Canadian Bar Association.
· Selected by The Calgary Herald in 1997 as one of Calgary's 12 Most Influential Business Persons; and in the same year one of the 50 Most Influential Albertans by Venture Magazine.
· Serves on the Board of Directors of a number of corporations, both public and private.
· Past President of The Calgary Chamber of Commerce.
· Appointed by Premier Ralph Klein to Chair the Alberta Economic Development Authority effective January 1999 and had previously served as Co-Chair since 1995.
· Chairman of the 2005 Winter Goodwill Games.
· While on leave of absence from Howard, Mackie, served as Commissioner of the Canadian Football League (CFL) from June 1984 to March 1989.
· Served as a member of the National Hockey League Board of Governors from 1980-84.
· Past Member of the Board of Directors of the Calgary Economic Development Authority.
