Biography

"The highest compliment a client paid me a few years ago was when he stated: 'Doug is the first lawyer that I've ever met who thinks like a business person - he anticipates what we need - he doesn't just reply to what we ask for.' I consider that my strength."

Areas of Focus

Doug has been a partner with Fillmore Riley LLP since 1983. His commercial practice involves general corporate and commercial matters, real property, wills and estates, and mortgage realization for mortgage lenders.

Doug's commercial practice is quite varied and over the years has involved business and property acquisitions, corporate reorganizations and shareholder disputes. He has acted for lenders, purchasers, landlords, tenants and has developed lending security for freehold and leasehold interests.

Doug has significant experience in mortgage realization and has served on the committee which developed the Rules in Mortgages Sale and Foreclosure Proceedings over the period between 1990 to 1996.

Representative Clients / Cases / Transactions

Doug has been extensively involved in mortgage realization matters since 1977. He has worked with land titles officials and other mortgage practitioners to adapt Manitoba's proceedings to changes in the world of commerce over the years. His most significant paper was his presentation to the Law Society in 1996 when the new Rules in Mortgage Sales and Foreclosure Proceedings were being presented to the Manitoba Bar. His paper described the changes and predicted how those changes would affect mortgage enforcement proceedings.
