THE IMPORTANCE OF DIVERSITY AT DOW LOHNES
At Dow Lohnes, we believe that workforce diversity is essential to providing the highest level of service to our clients and our community. While we all share certain values, such as a commitment to excellence and client service, our varied backgrounds, perspectives and experiences are critical to servicing our clients effectively and enriching our work environment. We have the good fortune to represent a large number of clients who themselves embrace the goal of workplace diversity for their own workforce and ours, many of whom in turn find themselves serving an increasingly diverse community of customers.

SUPPORTING AND INCREASING A DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF LAWYERS
We recognize that achieving diversity requires a long-term commitment of resources and focused attention from the firm's leadership and others throughout the firm. We are determined to foster a diverse workplace and have taken a number of steps to achieve this goal.

Diversity Committee. The Diversity Committee leads the firm's efforts to increase diversity, with an emphasis on the recruitment, retention and development of diverse attorneys. The Diversity Committee is comprised of members of the Management Committee and a diverse group of partners and associates. The Committee also seeks the input and involvement of all lawyers in the firm and works closely with the Professional Development Committee and the Hiring Committee.

Recruiting. The firm recruits from some of the most talented and diverse law school student bodies in the country. In addition, the firm regularly participates in a number of minority recruiting events such as the annual Mid-Atlantic Black Law Students Association Job Fair, the WALRAA Diversity Reception and various minority bar events. The firm also hosts a law student diversity reception each winter and sponsors a diversity scholarship at three prominent DC area law schools to honor outstanding students. Members of the Hiring Committee also routinely work with law school career services officers, student affinity groups and journals to promote interest from minority candidates. To help in its recruiting efforts, the firm also encourages search firms to provide a diverse slate of lateral attorney candidates.

Advisor/Mentor Program. The Advisor/Mentor Program provides one-on-one guidance to associates and helps them develop professionally. Under the program, each associate and his or her advisor meet regularly to discuss the associate's professional development and a wide range of issues related to the associate's career development at the firm.

Minority Networking Group. The firm sponsors a monthly lunch for minority attorneys to provide an open forum for discussion of issues and concerns, particularly issues relating to professional and personal development, recruiting, retention and advancement in the firm.

Alternative Work Arrangement Policy. As part of a broader commitment to maintain a flexible work environment, the firm has established an alternative work arrangement policy for its attorneys. The policy permits attorneys of either gender, in consultation with their practice groups and firm management, to devise part-time or flexible work arrangements. There are a number of lawyers at the firm who work part-time or with flexible schedules.

Subcommittee on Work/Life Balance. The firm has also established a subcommittee of the firm's Diversity Committee to review and provide advice about the firm's policies, programs and potential initiatives relating to work/life balance issues, including alterative work arrangements. A flexible work arrangements coordinator serves as a resource and counselor to attorneys who are considering (or who are already working under) an alternative work arrangement.

Atlanta Legal Diversity Consortium. The firm is a founding member of the Atlanta Legal Diversity Consortium and is represented on the ALDC board of directors. Through collaborative efforts of its membership to enhance diversity in the legal community, ALDC offers programs, events, information and other resources focused in the areas of recruiting, mentoring, retention and promotion of minorities in the legal profession.

DC Minority Networking Series. The firm is a member of the DC Minority Networking Series, a consortium of DC law firms providing networking opportunities for minority lawyers. The series was created in 2005 to provide minority attorneys an opportunity to focus on professional development, to network, and to build alliances and form relationships with peers practicing law in the DC area.

Diversity Leadership Academy. The firm has a fellowship in the Diversity Leadership Academy. The Academy brings together prominent community leaders to discuss and evaluate diversity issues in a wide variety of matters and to strategically plan and execute diversity initiatives both within their respective organizations and at-large in the community.

Domestic Partner Benefits. The firm offers health insurance, including medical and prescription drug benefits, dental and vision benefits to the same-sex domestic partners of its lawyers.

Emergency Child Care. The firm has established arrangements with various providers to assist with the emergency or alternative child care needs of its lawyers.

Paid Family Leave. The firm provides up to twelve weeks of paid family and medical leave for lawyers, including following childbirth or adoption, or when attorneys need to care for seriously ill family members.

Our lawyers also participate in many minority networking events throughout the year, attend panel discussions and speak at conferences including the Minority Corporate Counsel Association's Creating Pathways to Diversity annual conference. Through dedication and commitment to diversity in the workplace, Dow Lohnes will continue to strengthen our business and make our firm a competitive, interesting and dynamic place to build a legal career.
