Dr. Jens Peter Schmidt is a partner in the Brussels and Dusseldorf offices of Mayer Brown's Antitrust & Competition practice, and partner-in-charge of the Brussels office.
A focus of his counseling concerns merger control risk analyses and complex merger control notifications; he has gained considerable experience in responsibly handling second phase (in-depth) investigations before the European Commission and the German Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt). He regularly coordinates multi-jurisdictional merger filings.
Jens Peter also represents clients in cartel case investigations, structures compliance programmes, and provides assessments of vertical and horizontal arrangements, including information exchanges. He advises on state aid issues, in particular in the context of the financial crisis.

Jens Peter joined Mayer Brown in Cologne in 2001 and, in addition, the firm's Brussels office in 2002 where he now serves as partner in charge of the office. Before 2001, he had practiced law for three years in the Dusseldorf office of another major global law firm. Between 1995 and 1997 he worked at the Institute for Public Law at University of Bonn. He is fluent in English in addition to his native German.
