Edward M. Smid is an associate in the Indianapolis office of Barnes and Thornburg LLP and a member of the firm's Litigation Department.
Mr. Smid focuses his practice on commercial litigation, product liability defense, and toxic torts. Prior to joining the firm as an associate, he was a summer associate in the firm's Indianapolis office. During law school, Mr. Smid gained legal experience as a judicial extern for the Honorable Judge Sarah Evans Barker of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, as an intern for the United States Attorney's Office in Fort Wayne, Indiana, as an intern for the Indiana Court of Appeals, and as a certified legal intern in the Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis's Appellate Clinic.
Mr. Smid earned his J.D. magna cum laude from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. In law school, he was an articles editor for the Indiana International & Comparative Law Review, assistant chief justice of bylaws for the Moot Court Board, a tutor with the Dean's Tutorial Society, an advocate for the 2010 Moot Court National Team, and a volunteer with the Pro Bono Program. Mr. Smid received numerous awards for his studies, including the Judge Cale J. Holder Distinguished Scholar Award, the Honorable John L. Price Scholar Award and the Charles R. Oehrle Scholarship.
Mr. Smid earned his B.A. from Indiana University in 2001. Upon graduation, he served in the United States Marine Corps for six years as an infantry officer. An Iraq war veteran, he is currently a major in the Marine Corps Reserve.
Mr. Smid is co-chairman of the Indianapolis Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. He sits on the Board of Directors of American Legion Post 34, and volunteers as a youth mentor with Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Central Indiana. He is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association and the Indianapolis Bar Association.
Mr. Smid is admitted to practice in the state of Indiana and before the United States District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana.
