EDWIN (ED) D. GARLEPP is a partner in the firm's Electrical Patent Prosecution practice group. A former engineer and patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), his practice covers all areas of patent law including securing patent protection, drafting legal opinions and enforcing patents for both domestic and foreign clients.
Mr. Garlepp has experience in intellectual property due diligence and risk management assessment in acquisitions and other technology company investments. He is also well versed in the licensing of technologies and in addressing export control issues related to inventions by U.S. divisions of foreign companies.
Mr. Garlepp's technical expertise includes software technologies, lasers, optical systems, wireless communications systems, and semiconductor devices, processes and manufacturing equipment. He is also experienced in a broad array of consumer electronic technologies such as video display systems, A/V processing technologies and encoding schemes, electromechanical assemblies, and many other related technologies.
Before attending law school, Mr. Garlepp worked on communications and radar equipment for the U.S. Navy, and was an Electronics Systems Quality Engineer at Electromagnetic Sciences, Inc., where he worked on circuit and waveguide components for satellite switching systems. As a Patent Examiner for the USPTO, he specialized in redundant power sources and electronic switching systems. He continues to meet regularly with Patent Examiners and other staff at the USPTO to remain abreast of policies, practices and trends, and to efficiently navigate his clients through the examination process.
