Ms. Musick's practice emphasizes patent prosecution in the areas of telecommunications, signal and image processing, optics and lasers, computer software, data mining and learning machines, geophysics and oceanography, materials science, drug discovery, medical devices and procedures, electronics, bioinformatics and biomarker discovery, electro-mechanical and mechanical devices; trademark and copyright prosecution; and intellectual property licensing. Representative recent patent work includes seafloor electromagnetic measurement techniques for oil exploration, developed at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, gene expression databases and data mining, and medical diagnostics using support vector machines. She also does patent work covering a wide range of technologies developed by researchers in the physics and electrical & computer engineering departments at UCSD and the UCSD School of Medicine.
Prior to joining Procopio, Ms. Musick was Of Counsel with the Atlanta-based national law firm of Kilpatrick Stockton. Prior to Kilpatrick, she was a partner in the San Diego law firm of Brown, Martin, Haller & McClain, where she served as co-managing partner for 5 years.
Education, Distinctions & Community Involvement
Ms. Musick graduated from the University of California, San Diego, with a Bachelor of Science in Physics/Earth Science and a minor in Literature. She obtained her law degree, with Scholastic Merit, from Thomas Jefferson School of Law, where she was on the Law Review. She has earned credits toward a Professional Certificate from UCSD in Drug Discovery and Development and has several years of post-graduate work in Electrical Engineering at San Diego State University.
Ms. Musick is admitted to the State Bar of California, United States Patent and Trademark Office, United States District Court for the Southern District of California, United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Ms. Musick is a member of E.W. Scripps Associates, Athena San Diego, the Intellectual Property Law Sections of both the State Bar of California and the American Bar Association, The Zoological Society of San Diego Benefactor's Circle and President's Associates, the Council of 1000 of the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the University of California San Diego Chancellor's Associates. She is also a member of the Dean's Advisory Board for the Department of Physical Sciences at UCSD. Additionally, Ms. Musick serves on the Board of Trustees for ECOLIFE Foundation, which provides sustainable solutions to address both conservation and humanitarian concerns. She also serves on the Board of Directors of San Diego Coastkeeper, whose goal is to protect and restore fishable, swimmable and drinkable waters in San Diego County. In addition, Ms. Musick founded and manages Cardiff Dog Park, a community dog park on the grounds of Cardiff Elementary School, part of a joint project with Scrumptious Schoolyards, a non-profit whose mission is to create organic gardens and landscapes that provide an active, hands-on learning environment and establish the foundation for a school's curriculum, culture and food program.
