Biography

Elizabeth (Betsy) Grossman is an associate in Caplin & Drysdale's Washington, D.C., office. She joined the firm in 2009 after serving as a law clerk to the Honorable Peter W. Hall of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Ms. Grossman earned her J.D. from Harvard Law School, where she was Co-President of the Harvard Journal on Legislation.

Services

Ms. Grossman provides comprehensive tax advice to tax-exempt organizations. She advises public charities, private foundations, private colleges and universities, hospitals, and religious organizations on a variety of legal issues, including qualification for exempt status, corporate governance, charitable contributions, fundraising, executive compensation, and unrelated business income tax. She also helps nonprofit organizations comply with the rules governing lobbying and political activities.

Highlights

Ms. Grossman served as a legal extern for the Enforcement Division of the Federal Election Commission, where she drafted and edited Conciliation Agreements and reports to the Commissioners on Matters Under Review. She also interned at The Campaign Legal Center, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working in the areas of campaign finance and elections, political communication, and government ethics.

Prior to attending law school, Ms. Grossman worked for a national association of nonprofit organizations. In her capacity as organizational development fellow, she coordinated institutional and campaign planning, fundraising, and citizen outreach efforts for 27 state-level environmental and consumer advocacy organizations. She also wrote and managed multi-state grants, oversaw departmental and project budgets, and organized training sessions for over 300 staff members. In addition, Ms. Grossman has worked for the Pine Tree Society, where she managed a program providing affordable, high-quality adaptive equipment to children with special needs.
