Betsy is an experienced trial lawyer with a special expertise in business fraud, high technology/trade secret, corporate governance, and fiduciary duty matters. She served for 10 years as the Chair of Mintz Levin's Litigation Section and in other firm management roles. Since 2004, Betsy has been recognized annually as a Massachusetts Super Lawyer, and since 2008, she has been nationally recognized by Corporate Counsel Magazine as one of the "Top Attorneys in Business Litigation in the United States." In 2008, Betsy was elected as a fellow in the Litigation Counsel of America. She lectures regularly on corporate governance issues before the Directors Club, a private association of public company directors. Betsy advises corporate directors with respect to corporate governance issues and fiduciary duties. In 2009, she successfully represented two pubic company directors, obtaining dismissal of all claims against them. Betsy also represents life sciences and medical device corporations involved in trade secret litigation. In 2010, she defeated a $220 million damages claim against her client. In 2011, Betsy obtained a judgment in favor of her client in a trade secret misappropriation trial, involving medical device technology. Betsy also has experience in high-profile litigation that requires her advice and counsel on issues relating to the media, advocacy groups, and government relations. Her client matters have been profiled in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Forbes, Newsweek, and on CNBC. Betsy is an experienced jury trial lawyer. She represented plaintiffs in a three-month jury trial that resulted in the largest reported verdict in Massachusetts that year, and represented a public company in a four-week jury trial that defeated a $30 million punitive damages claim. Her jury trial experience is diverse, involving commercial litigation, construction, fraud, embezzlement, and personal injury cases. Most recently, Betsy obtained the following favorable outcomes for her clients: · In re: Midway Games, Inc. (U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Del.): Dismissal of breach of fiduciary duty claims against her clients Shari Redstone and Robert Steele, former directors of Midway Games, Inc. · LightLab Imaging, Inc. v. Axsun Technologies, Inc. and Volcano Corporation (Mass. Business Law Session Court): Defeated $220 million lost profits damages claim, following a three-day hearing. · LightLab Imaging, Inc. v. Axsun Technologies, Inc. and Volcano Corporation (Mass. Business Law Session Court): Defeated trade secret misappropriation claims relating to medical technology, following a two week trial, and related hearings. Betsy is committed to public service. She is a director of the Brown University Sports Foundation and of the Greater Boston YMCA, and was appointed by Brown University's President Simmons to Brown's Women's Leadership Council. Betsy is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and before the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and the First Circuit Court of Appeals, and has appeared in courts throughout the country. Betsy graduated from Brown University and the University of Michigan Law School. She is married and has two children.
