She counsels individuals and families in developing lifetime gifting and testamentary plans to best accomplish their dispositive goals and to minimize estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer taxes. She also counsels individuals and families in the administration of personal or charitable trusts, private foundations, family partnerships or limited liability companies, and estates.
Ellen is experienced in many leveraged gifting and planning structures, such as the formation and funding of grantor retained annuity trusts, qualified personal residence trusts, charitable remainder unitrusts, family limited partnerships and limited liability companies, and planning for loans or sales of assets to family members or grantor trusts. She also frequently works with clients owning private equity interests and the transfer of these interests. She has represented families and fiduciaries in the preparation of estate tax returns and the administration of estates, with particular experience in estates holding partnership, limited liability and other family business interests. She has represented fiduciaries in audits by the Internal Revenue Service and Massachusetts Department of Revenue involving gift and estate tax returns.
