Eric Schmalz is an associate with Foley & Lardner LLP where he counsels clients on the selection, clearance, registration and enforcement of trademarks and service marks. He also assists clients with issues relating to false advertising, domain name dispute resolution, the enforcement of copyrights and trademarks over the Internet, and intellectual property aspects of business transactions, including due diligence and the assignment and licensing of intellectual property assets. Mr. Schmalz is a member of the Trademark, Copyright & Advertising Practice.
Mr. Schmalz has co-authored the articles, "Dealing With Gripers And Critics: The Intersection of Publicity, the Law and Free Speech," IP Today, February 2010 and "Colorful Rights: Trademark Protection for Color Schemes," Legal News Alerts: Sports, December 2008.
Mr. Schmalz earned his law degree, cum laude, from Northwestern University Law School in 2008, where he served as a research assistant during the summer of 2006. He received a bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, from Marquette University in 2004, with a double major in computer science and philosophy.
Mr. Schmalz worked as a summer associate at Foley in 2007. He also worked as an engineering intern at Johnson Controls, Inc. prior to attending law school.
Mr. Schmalz is admitted to practice in Wisconsin.
