| Biography | Sherman Boughton is a member in the firm's New Orleans office. His practice is devoted to general and commercial litigation and real estate. His clients include nursing homes, hospitals, manufacturers, contractors, property owners, tenants, managers and lenders. In addition to handling litigation matters for these clients, he has handled commercial transactions including closings, brokerage and sale contract negotiations, office and retail leases, ground and other net leases, agricultural and recreational hunting leases. In addition to his law practice, Sherman is very active in the community. In 1994-95 he served as a member of the Louisiana State University Board of Supervisors. He has served as a member of the East Carroll Parish Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, the Lake Providence Housing Authority Board of Commissioners and as attorney for the Lake Providence Zoning Commission. As a member of the Community Action Agency of the East Carroll Parish Police Jury, Sherman helped oversee the distribution of USDA commodities to the poor. He served on the first Board of Directors of the East Carroll Parish Communications District, which implemented enhanced 911 services for the parish. In 2000 Sherman was appointed to serve as a member of the Louisiana Legislature's Commission on Multidisciplinary Teams Approach to Child Abuse Cases. Also in 2000, he was elected Coroner of East Carroll Parish. Sherman is an active member of the World Trade Center of New Orleans and he has volunteered his time in the SOLACE and HELP programs in New Orleans. In addition to his studies at home, Sherman also studied at the University of London as an undergraduate student in 1989 and as a law student in 1993 at the University of Aix-Marseille III in Aix-en-Provence, France. As an undergraduate student, Sherman was very active in the Student Government Association, was president of Omicron Delta Kappa, and was the student member of the Louisiana Student Financial Assistance Commission. As a law student he was active in the Student Bar Association and was elected President of the Student Bar in his third year. He also worked as a research assistant for the Louisiana Mineral Law Institute. Litigation Sherman's litigation practice is broad and includes medical malpractice defense, toxic tort defense, various real property issues, contract disputes, public and private works act claims, foreclosures, title insurance defense and insurance defense. He has represented both manufacturers and premises owners in toxic tort litigation, including class actions. In 1997 and 1999 he held the foreclosure contract covering 15 parishes for the United States Department of Agriculture, Rural Housing Service. The foreclosure contract required Sherman to reduce more than 200 claims to judgment and then to execute on the judgments, seizing and selling the properties at sheriff's sale. Since 1998 he has handled over 100 title insurance claims, many of which are complex and require extensive litigation to resolve. Business Sherman's real property and transactional expertise has been developed through his representation of a regional wireless carrier in the acquisition of over 100 tower and antenna sites in Louisiana and Mississippi. He participated in the representation of a major gaming company in its acquisition of multiple properties in Louisiana in 2001. In the late 1990's he participated in the representation of the purchasers of what is believed to be the largest contiguous tract of land to be sold in Louisiana since the Louisiana Purchase. In 2002 Sherman represented a non-profit foundation in its successful efforts to liquidate its entire real estate portfolio which included commercial and agricultural tracts across Louisiana.
