History: The firm was founded in 1924 under the name of Carr, Cox, Evans & Riley. In the firm's 80 year history the firm name has changed a number of times. In 1998, the firm name was changed to FINLEY, ALT, SMITH, SCHARNBERG, CRAIG, HILMES & GAFFNEY, P.C.

The firm has 16 lawyers and 4 paraprofessionals.
Firm Activities: The firm encourages participation in community activities and mandates CLE hours for each lawyer each year. A practice management committee supervises the assignment of work and monitors the work of younger lawyers. Monthly meetings of all lawyers and paraprofessionals are held to discuss new and revised laws and regulations. All lawyers are members of the American Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Association and the Polk County Bar Association. In addition, firm members are encouraged to belong to specialized groups such as the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel, Defense Research Institute, American Academy of Hospital Attorneys and National Health Lawyers Association.
Client Base: Clients represent leaders in their industries such as insurance, railroads, banking, health care and retirement living. Although a significant amount of work comes from corporations, the firm continues to represent individuals and small businesses.
