Mr. Sappington has served as outside counsel to a not-for-profit, faith-based community hospital for more than 28 years. He has focused on tax-exempt organizations, as well as physician practice issues.

Mr. Sappington provides answers to a broad range of health care questions. In his role as outside counsel, Mr. Sappington has advised non-profit hospitals concerning regulatory compliance, reimbursement and risk management issues. He has structured and syndicated ambulatory surgery centers, assisted in the sale and monetization of health care real estate and represents physician groups, public health entities and clinics.

•Structured physician-hospital joint ventures for imaging, outpatient surgery, pain management and real estate development.
•Advised physician practices concerning Stark and anti-kickback compliance, corporate structuring and risk management policies.
•Focused on medical staff bylaws, governance and due process issues in the context of medical staff disciplinary hearings and privileging disputes.
•Wrote or revised medical staff bylaws, policies and procedures for several health care systems and hospitals.
•Advised on patient consent issues under both Missouri and Kansas laws.
•Interacted extensively with health care regulators in Missouri and Kansas.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), enacted in 2010, mandates that Medicare/Medicaid-certified nursing facilities and skilled nursing facilities have an effective compliance plan in place by March 23, 2013.
