Biography

...one of the very best lawyers to turn to for advice on deals involving mineral resources or partnerships...technically sound and practical...

Chambers USA 2006

George Luscombe has a wide-ranging transactional practice that emphasizes federal and state taxation issues. He represents seller, buyer and lender clients in structuring taxable and tax-free corporate acquisition, divestiture, joint venture, leveraged buy-out and leveraged lease transactions. He also structures partnership, joint venture, and syndication vehicles for real estate, natural resource and alternative energy activities.

In addition, George structures investment vehicles and real estate acquisitions for tax-exempt entities including pension trusts. He represents tax-exempt organizations, including on issues such as qualification and unrelated business taxation. His practice also emphasizes general corporate, partnership, real estate and natural resources taxation.

Clients note in Chambers USA 2007 that George has 'fine skills' displayed on a range of divestitures, acquisitions, LBOs and leveraged lease transactions and call him (2006) one of the very best lawyers to turn to for advice on deals involving mineral resources or partnerships...'technically sound and practical.' Earlier comments in Chambers USA 2004-2005 call him 'the wisest, brightest and deepest tax lawyer I know,' and add that his work is important to concerns in the energy, natural resources and real estate sectors. He is also known as an expert in handling partnership tax transactions.

George has written numerous articles and speeches on subjects including corporate reorganizations, partnerships, leasing, natural resources, planning of capital assets and the Bankruptcy Tax Act for various organizations including Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education, American Law Institute, American Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association, University of Chicago Tax Institute, Tulane Tax Institute, IIT/Chicago-Kent Tax Institute, Illinois State Bar Association, Canadian Petroleum Tax Society and Canadian Property Forum.

George joined Mayer Brown in 1973 after serving for four years in Washington, DC, with the Office of Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service, Legislation and Regulations Division. He is a Registered Certified Public Accountant in Illinois (1966).
