Biography

George Macintosh leads the litigation group in the law firm of Farris in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he has practised since his call to the Bar of British Columbia. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in British Columbia in 1987, elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1991 and a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers in 2001. Canadian, U.S. and U.K. publications repeatedly rank him as one of Canada's leading commercial litigators.

Mr. Macintosh practises as general counsel specializing in civil litigation, at trial and on appeal, appearing before many provincial and federal tribunals, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He also sits from time to time as an arbitration chair in a wide variety of disputes. Mr. Macintosh has served as Special Prosecutor appointed by the Attorney General of British Columbia, as Commission counsel for the government of British Columbia and as counsel to a panel of the Canadian Judicial Council in its hearing of a complaint against a federally-appointed judge.

Mr. Macintosh is a member of the Supreme Court of Canada Advocacy Institute (B.C. Region), which provides advice to counsel for their first appearances before the Supreme Court of Canada. He frequently serves as a lecturer and is a published author in litigation subjects, and serves as the co-chair in teaching the Allan McEachern Course on Trial Advocacy at UBC Law School. He is a founding member of the British Columbia Inns of Court project which is devoted to fostering professionalism in young lawyers. He has also served on various committees addressing legislative reform in matters of evidence and civil procedure.

Mr. Macintosh is a past chair of the civil litigation section of the Canadian Bar Association and a past chair of the civil litigation subsection of the Canadian Bar Association, B.C. Branch. He has served as chair (2001, 2002) and a director of the Sopinka Cup Society, which hosts the national finals of the Canadian law school trial moot competition. In 2002, he was a member of the six-person Canadian delegation to Taiwan to advise the Taiwanese government with respect to the adversarial system of law.

Mr. Macintosh has served (2002, 2004) as a member of the federal Minister of Justice's Advisory Committee on Judicial Appointments for British Columbia. He was a Canadian Representative at the 2007 Canada-US Legal Exchange, held every ten years, hosted by the Supreme Court of the United States and the Supreme Court of Canada, and sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Industry recognition includes being selected by Lexpert magazine as one of Canada's top 25 commercial litigators; he has been listed in Lexpert's Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada for the past ten years; he is consistently named among Lexpert's Top 100 US/Canada Cross Border Litigators in Canada; he is listed in The Best Lawyers in Canada; and he is ranked by Chambers Global.

Mr. Macintosh has received a "very high to preeminent" legal ability rating from Martindale-Hubbell, an authoritative and global source for identifying leading lawyers and law firms.
