Biography

Professional Experience

Greg Hayes is chair of Day Pitney's Individual Clients Department. Greg advises individual clients regarding all aspects of their estate planning, including succession planning for family businesses and planning for distribution of retirement plan assets, and represents individuals and fiduciaries in the administration of complex estates and trusts. Greg has substantial experience handling contested probate matters, including will contests and construction actions.

Greg received his B.S. cum laude from Yale University and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he served as a member of the Editorial Board of the Virginia Tax Review. Greg is a fellow of the American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel, is listed in The Best Lawyers in America in trusts and estates, and is also a member of the executive committee of the Estates and Probate Section of the Connecticut Bar Association.

Greg's charitable activities have included service on the board of directors of Literacy Volunteers of Connecticut and service on the board of directors of the Darien Arts Council. Greg currently serves on the DOMUS Foundation board of directors and on the Fairfield County Community Foundation Board of Professional Advisors.

Greg is the author of "Intrafamily Loans: Keep Wealth in the Family without Paying Tax," Tax Hotline, May 11, 2003, and is co-author of "When IRS Actuarial Tables Don't Apply in Valuing Interests," Estate Planning Journal, February 2005 (with Edward F. Krzanowski) and "Administration of Insolvent Estates in Connecticut," Connecticut Bar Journal, Vol. 69, No. 5, October 1995. He is also co-author of "2005 Developments in Connecticut Probate, Estate, and Gift Tax Law," Connecticut Bar Journal, Volume 80, No. 2, June 2006; "A Prescription to Minimize Executor's Personal Liability Risk for Federal Estate Tax," The Connecticut Law Tribune, July 1998; and "When Unpaid Taxes Pick Executor's Pocket," Legal Times, November 1998. Greg has also presented a number of seminar programs, including, "Distributions from Qualified Plans" and "Trust Funding" at the Connecticut Post Mortem Planning Strategies and Issues seminar, sponsored by Professional Education Systems, Inc., on September 28, 2000; "Distributions from Qualified Plans and IRAs; Revisiting the Minimum Distribution Rules" at the Connecticut Bar Association's Compact Sophisticated Estate Planning II seminar, May 23, 2001; "Administration of Insolvent Estates" at the joint Connecticut Bar Association/Connecticut Probate Assembly seminar on January 25, 2005; and "The New Connecticut Estate Tax" at the Fairfield County Bar Association's seminar on April 5, 2006.

Greg lives in Fairfield, CT with his wife, Jenny, and daughters Caroline, Elizabeth, and Ashley. In his free time, Greg enjoys coaching in area youth leagues and participating in sporting activities.
