Biography

Hathaway Pease Russell practices intellectual property law with a focus on the life sciences industry. She has extensive experience assisting research institutions, start-up biotechnology companies, and established U.S. and international corporations with many aspects of intellectual property law, including patent portfolio management, freedom-to-operate analysis, due diligence, complex patent litigation and interference proceedings.

Hathaway has a particular interest in the areas of pharmacogenomics, proteomics and disease biomarkers, and their application to personalized medicine. She collaborates with the firm's Government Strategies Group on regulatory matters, including recent initiatives by the FDA in the area of advanced diagnostics, and also works with the Litigation Group, for which she recently filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of the Association of University Technology Managers in Mayo Collaborative Services and Mayo Clinic Rochester v. Prometheus Laboratories, Inc.

In addition to her practice, Hathaway has lectured on patenting strategies and in vitro diagnostics at national and international conferences. She is an active member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and serves as the current Vice-Chair of the Women in IP Committee. Hathaway also co-organizes the Consumer Genetics Conference, an annual conference that covers the intellectual property, regulatory and policy landscapes in the field of personalized medicine.
