| Born | 1934 | | | Biography | Following graduation from the University of New Brunswick Law School and admission to the New Brunswick Bar, he launched his legal career in Saint John. In 1964 he was elected to Saint John City Council and named Deputy Mayor in 1966. In the 1967 provincial election he was elected as a Saint John MLA and was appointed to cabinet as Minister of Economic Growth. He was re-elected in 1970 and 1974 and retired from politics in 1978. He resumed the practice of law and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1978. In 1979, he was appointed to the Bench. He received an honourary D.C.L. Degree from UNBSJ in 1990. Throughout his career, Mr. Justice Higgins was a respected jurist who, in his later years, was particularly recognized for his highly successful mediation skills. In 1999 he achieved supernumerary status. A native of Saint John, the Hon. Robert J. Higgins recently retired from the Court of Queen's Bench of New Brunswick, having earned the widespread admiration and respect of the province's legal community. | | | ISLN | 906492541 | |
