Practice/Industry Group Overview
Of the more than 90 lawyers in the firm's intellectual property section, about 15 devote a sizable portion of their practice to biotechnology. That group includes several lawyers who have completed graduate-level work in the sciences, allowing Hunton & Williams LLP to address all issues related to biotech and pharmaceutical matters.

Firm handles Fen-Phen defense
Hunton & Williams represented Gate Pharmaceuticals, a phentermine manufacturer, in defense of "Fen-Phen" diet drug claims as regional counsel in the states of VA, NC, SC, GA, WV, and TN. The plaintiffs alleged various cardiac, pulmonary, neurotoxic and other disorders resulting from consumption of diet drugs. In addition to defending Gate in a class action certified by the Circuit Court of Brooke County, West Virginia, we defended Gate Pharmaceuticals in cases involving approximately 300 plaintiffs in other state and federal courts.
